This position is assigned to the Human Resources Department

Under direct supervision, the Office Assistant performs general office procedures including use of office equipment, typing, copying, filing, data entry, answering telephones, stocking office supplies, working with the public at the front counter and other related duties as required. The work schedule is Monday - Thursday 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., or 11:00 - a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (16 hrs/wk). This part-time, temporary position may be required to work flexible hours depending on the needs of the department.

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
  • Provides customer service to the public and staff at a front counter;
  • Provides clerical support such as data entry (using standard and specialized software programs), types and word processes memos, letters and other correspondence;
  • Answers telephones, provides requested information, and takes messages or redirects inquiries to other staff members;
  • Assists with recruitment activities such as proctors exams, coordinates lunches and snacks on interview days;
  • Provides office coverage when staff is unavailable at trainings, events or activities;
  • Sets up/cleans up for HR special events;
  • Maintains spreadsheets and databases;
  • Assists in the maintenance of departmental files (both hard copy and electronic);
  • Maintains front counter and office areas; inventory and stock office supplies;
  • Operates a variety of office equipment including computers, copiers, and multi-line telephones;
  • Processes incoming and outgoing mail and coordinates incoming and outgoing shipments; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Any combination of education and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this classification may be qualifying. An example would be:

EDUCATION: Graduation from high school or equivalent; and

EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of general, clerical office work experience.


EVALUATION PROCESS The deadline to apply is by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 10, 2026Interested applicants must submit an online application and a completed supplemental questionnaire. Candidates whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the city will be invited to participate in the examination process for this position which may consist of any or all of the following components: Appraisal interview, a written exercise, or a practical skills assessment.

The City may change the interview date at its discretion due to departmental staffing and operational needs.

The applicant selected will be subject to a criminal history investigation through the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and a thorough background check. A waiver for reference and background information must be completed.

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver's license at time of appointment. A safe driving record is required and must be maintained during period of employment.


City of Santee employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
