C&S has supplied the grocery business since 1918, when Israel Cohen and Abraham Siegel founded it in Worcester, Massachusetts. The wholesale half now runs 60 distribution centers supplying chain and independent grocers, e-commerce retailers, and US military commissaries and exchanges. The retail half is easier to picture: more than 200 company-operated supermarkets under banners including D&W Fresh Market, Grand Union, Family Fare, Martin's Super Markets, and Piggly Wiggly, along with pharmacies and fuel centers.
Staffing at C&S means two labor markets at once, a warehouse and driver workforce at the distribution centers and a retail workforce at the company-operated stores, held together by the corporate side.
