Two Maryland counties, Montgomery and Prince George's, share one park and planning agency: The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, created in 1927 to plan orderly development and protect natural resources in the suburbs bordering Washington, D.C. Its planners shape communities, roads, and transportation systems; its park side stewards parkland, trails, and open space; and since the 1970s the commission has also run the public recreation program for all of Prince George's County.
