Two of the oldest names in American media live inside one company here. Carl Laemmle, a German immigrant by way of Chicago, founded the Universal Film Manufacturing Company while the film business was still being invented, and David Sarnoff founded NBC as a radio network in 1926, having proposed the idea as early as 1915. Universal opened its first Hollywood theme park in the 1960s. The two companies merged in 2004 to form NBCUniversal, and Comcast completed its acquisition of the combined company in January 2011. The divisions today are Media, Studios, NBC News Group, and Destinations and Experiences.
Four divisions with genuinely different labor shapes report to one owner. Film and television production, a news organization, a streaming service, and theme park operations each staff on their own rhythm and their own seasonality, which makes workforce planning here a multi-business exercise.
