Tacoma Community College has taught over 500,000 students since it opened in 1965. The main campus covers 150 acres in west Tacoma, about 35 miles south of Seattle, with 28 buildings and roughly half a million square feet holding a health science center, computer center, learning resource center, art gallery, gymnasium, student center, and an early learning center. A second campus sits in Gig Harbor across the Narrows Bridge. The catalog runs to 50 associate degrees, 28 professional and technical certifications, and four Bachelor of Applied Science degrees.

A Washington community college hires classified staff under state civil service rules and faculty under separate agreements, so classification, salary schedules, and bargaining data are the daily material. Part-time and adjunct instruction adds a large variable population to count.
